National Historic District, Alma, Wisconsin

In 1982, 346 acres and over 200 buildings were included in the designation of the City of Alma as a National Historic District (#82000631) when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).  The district is roughly bounded by railroad tracks, 2nd Street, Swift Street and Cedar Street.  Three periods of significance were recognized:  1850-1874, 1875-1899, 1900-1924

The National Historic District shows architectural styles of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Blocks within the District are separated by unique stairways given street names. Alma is located along the Mississippi River, stretched snugly between the river and steep 500 foot bluffs. Early settlers were attracted to the area because it reminded them of their homelands, Switzerland and Germany.

Stair Step Streets, Alma, Wisconsin

Stair Step Streets, Alma, Wisconsin

Walk the historic stair step streets in Alma, Wisconsin while you enjoy history and get a little exercise.

Few cities in the US have actual streets composed of stairs.  Alma has 10 with more than 650 steps!  The walk will start at Hickory Street, and continue up and down the stair streets, returning to the Wings Over Alma Visitor Center for breakfast.

The Stairstep Streets of Alma are a familiar sight to anyone who has ever passed through Alma, Wisconsin.  These 19th century passageways were built in an era when the automobile did not exist and getting up or down a hill required nothing more than a decent pair of shoes.  In order to help citizens navigate the City’s steep terrain quickly, steps and stairs sprung up all over the city.   Steps even double as legal streets and these staircases appear on maps as valid thoroughfares – an often consternating surprise to unsuspecting visitors.

Flat Pennies Ice Cream Shop

Phone: (715)594-3555

A great place to take a break! The Flat Penny Ice Cream Shop has an antique railroad caboose (Soo Line #27 from Colfax, WI) parked beside it! A great spot for photos. The ice cream is really creamy – nine choices of flavors, plus 10 ways to enjoy it! And lots of toppings. If you need a protein boost they feature hot dogs and homemade beef sandwiches, plus pop and coffee (complete with a “splash” of ice cream if you wish!), bottled water, hobo sticks and PowerAde. A really neat thing to do: get your ice cream. Eat it at a picnic table, with your dog fastened to a “hitching post” next to you. Be sure to mention you have a dog! They have very nutritious doggy treats!). Then get in your car; drive to the BNSF railroad crossing just down the road (you can see it from Flat Pennies), cross over the tracks; drive straight ahead to the Mississippi River (2 short blocks); turn right; go the end of the street (maybe 3 blocks). You’ll be in a parking lot at a park. Get out of the car; walk out into the shaded park to water’s edge. Or walk in the sand along the shore. Dip your toes in the Mississippi River. Or maybe you’d like to skip rocks on the water or look for agates. If you’re lucky, a fisherman may come off the river and you can see what kind of luck he had fishing—or not. A good place to linger.

Directions: As you enter the town limits, watch on the bluff side of the road for the caboose–just about in the middle of the town. Off street parking available.

Lock and Dam No. 4, located at river mile 752.8 in Alma, Wis., is an important link in the “step” system of the Upper Mississippi 9-foot navigational channel. The lock and dam locks thousands of vessels, ranging from commodity-laden tows to small pleasure craft and canoes, annually. Commodities carried by barges include grain, coal, fertilizer and petroleum products. The lock is 600 feet long by 110 feet wide. It raises and lowers traffic seven feet. The dam is 6,876 feet long, including 1,367 feet of movable gate sections and 5,500 feet of earth fill dike. The movable gate section consists of six roller gates and 22 Tainter gates.

McGilvray Road and the Van Loon Wildlife Area

Holmen, WI 54636

The Van Loon Wildlife Area Truss Bridge Group is a unique combination of five rare bowstring arch truss bridges and one low truss bridge which was adopted from Pierce County. They represent two styles of bridge construction popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries which are quickly being replaced due to deterioration or inability to meet today’s greater traffic requirements. Currently the bridges are open only to pedestrian traffic. The bridges are located in the Van Loon Wildlife Area on the Old McGilvray Bottoms Road. The wildlife area contains about 4000 acres of land, much of it former farmland, along and through the Black River and its backwater. The purpose of the area is to provide birdwatching, fishing and hunting for waterfowl, upland game and deer.

Directions: Located in Northwest La Crosse County, about 3.5 miles northwest of the Holmen. The property extends 5 miles south of the Black River, from Hwy 53/93 Hunter’s Bridge to New Amsterdam on County Trunk XX. The entire trail from the parking lot to the 6th bridge and back measures 3.7 miles.

Rieck's Lake Park, Alma, Wisconsin

Rieck’s Lake Park, Alma, Wisconsin

Rieck’s Lake is located at the confluence of the Buffalo and Mississippi Rivers and is best known as a central staging area for Tundra Swans when they are in migration, but the park offers so much more.  Beautiful sunrises start your day and if you are traveling in the summer months you may experience the morning mist as it rises from the water.  Located 3 miles northwest of Alma on Wisconsin Hwy 35 (the Great River Road), the area is handicapped accessible and provides a large parking lot that accommodates several vehicles.

Rieck’s Lake Park offers a small popular camping area on a “first come” basis.  For $15 a night you will enjoy a paved camping pad, fire pit, picnic table, showers and a direct lake view.  Electricity is available at an additional charge.  Dumping facility is available 2 miles north on Wisconsin Hwy 35 at the Silver Moon facility.  For information, directions, regulations and prices contact the Alma City Clerk at (608) 685-3330.

Recreational options abound with a picnic shelter, ball diamond and a playground that offers a  play structure as well as old time swings, slide and merry-go-round we all enjoyed as children.

The park is an excellent birding spot with two viewing decks and a spotting scope.  Expect crowds in the fall when the Tundra Swans are in migration.  Although the swan population does not reach the number experienced in the 1990′s, swans can still be viewed in a significant number.  Other wildlife like beaver, muskrat and mink can be sited, with muskrat huts visible on the lake.

DRIVE Wisconsin Highway 35 northeast from Alma about 3 miles.  The park is located on the Wisconsin Great River Road.

Stockholm Institute

Spring Street
Stockholm, WI 54769

In the Village of Stockholm there is a small, picturesque museum in a building that was once the old Post Office. It is the home of the Stockholm Institute, a historical society incorporated in 1984 to preserve and celebrate the history of the Stockholm area. Stockholm was fortunate to have been the home of Orlin Anderson, now deceased, who was a dedicated amateur historian and archivist of all things related to the area. He was also a dedicated pack-rat and because of that predilection there are probably items and photos in the museum that would otherwise have been long lost. Orlin’s enthusiasm for all things old encouraged others to donate their objects, books, and photos, and it may have been the accumulation of items that inspired insightful residents to create an organization that would preserve and display this wealth of material and memories. Thus was born the Institute. Its visitors come from across the country and around the world. It publishes a regular newsletter for its members, and in the past has been a sponsor of the Heritage Days that Stockholm has hosted. In 2006, the Institute welcomed the 50-member Bjurtjarn Theater Group. This group toured the U.S. performing its play “Off to America – They Sold their Homesteads” (a story about their ancestors who founded Stockholm). After the events and festivities, the theater group donated the rights to the play to the Stockholm Institute. The Institute’s museum building has recently been refurbished and redecorated in an appropriate Swedish palette, with new shelves for books and a large work table available for visitors who wish to review the family histories that have been gathered. A local archivist is also in the process of identifying and organizing the Institute’s wealth of material (some of it retrieved from Orlin’s estate) so that it remains usable to future historians.

Pizza farm at its best! Come and relax in the serenity of Yaeger Valley and experience our farm while enjoying a casual dining experience in our backyard amongst the gardens and barnyard animals.   Visit with friends and neighbors, play yard games with your family, let the kids explore the playground, and experience the splendor of eating outdoors.

Where else can you take your kids out for supper where running around, spilling your food, and making some noise is all OKAY? It’s up to you what style you like…from blankets on the ground, portable camping chairs, to linen tablecloths, candles, and wine.

Campfires are often lit at dusk to take off the chill of the night and draw us into the warmth and seduction of the fire. Smores welcome!

Suncrest Gardens Farm is a 16 acre family farm nestled amongst the rolling river bluffs of west-central Wisconsin. The farm’s mission is to create and enhance community relationships through fresh, locally produced food.  Suncrest Gardens Farm was founded in rural Cochrane, WI, in 2003.  The 16 acre farm continually grows into a more sustainable farming business that brings community together around the subject of food, enriching both the body and soul with our naturally grown vegetables and our community-oriented dining experiences on the farm which often include live music.
